It seems there's been some speculation as to the events and facts leading to Gizmo's death. His
family has provided this summary.
Gizmo was admitted to the hospital on Jan. 25 with pain in his left leg
and 'flu-like' symptoms. He was later diagnosed with a massive strep
infection which caused cellulitus in his leg. He underwent an operation to
remove the infected tissue, and remained unconscious from that point on.
The infection was eventually brought under control through two additional
surgical procedures as well as antibiotic treatments. He died of the septic
shock the infection produced at 4:10 PM, February 2, 2001, surrounded by his
mother Kate, his father Jack, his sister Valerie, and his friend since childhood Than.
